As I’ve been working with my clients, I’ve talked with quite a few business owners. I see a lot of mistakes with contracts. Either a business isn’t using contracts (yes you need them!) or the contract is overly complicated. The reason many business owners fall into one of these groups is because they think a contract has to be long and complex. They get so overwhelmed they don’t use one at all and just hope nothing goes wrong in the future, or they go to the other extreme and copy and paste together a Frankenstein contract that makes no sense but looks impressive because of all the big legal words. Does this sound like anyone you know?

This means that you should understand what your contract says. If you don’t, you may be agreeing to something you didn’t intend to. Or, you may not have excluded things you actually wanted. Often times, you do not need an overly complicated, 10-pound stack of paper as a contract. Use a simple contract that says what you mean.

The easiest way to have a good contract is to decide what you want, write it down as though you were explaining it to a friend, and then take the contract to an attorney for a final review. We can help you know what sections need to be added in, fill in any gaps, and add in any required legal language.
